See a Dietitian and get some advice

August 01 2017

After a long time of putting this off and telling myself I know what I'm doing I decided it was time to get this done. I did a fair amount of research online (a whole 20 mins of googling) and found a place that I thought looked pretty good and made an appointment.

At first we talked about what I eat now to work out what my current diet actually is. I would describe my diet as the usual 20-somethings "just moved out of home" diet but with less beer. We are talking lots of fast food, lots of take-away, lots of junk, coke and red bull to wake up in the mornings with no fruit or veggies other than the potato in hot chips and the tomatoes in tomato sauce. He wasn't really too shocked by this so I was happy I was in good hands and I think he has seen this before.

After the expected (and justified) guilt about eating crap and not eating anything good we talked about getting some real details about where I am at now in terms of vitamins and minerals so we needed to get a full set of blood tests done to see how everything was going. After all those tests were done I was actually doing pretty well - the only thing that needed some attention was my vitamin D which was a bit low but nothing serious. Apparently busy lifestyles means more stress and less leisure time to relax and de-stress so we are all becoming more stressed which burns through your vitamin D. In Australia we constantly get sun warnings and skin cancer warnings everywhere so probably everyone has vitamin D problems now.

It turns out I'm a bit too highly stressed and that's about it :)

The plan moving forward is to actually start including some veggies in my diet and try to cut down the junk which I could work out in 5 mins of googling so that was a bit of a waste but I did get my blood checked out which was nice.
